Portugal is Europe’s westernmost country, situated on the Iberian Peninsula and bordering Spain in the European Union. Officially known as the República Portuguesa, it is a member of Europe’s Schengen Area and uses € as its currency.
One of the oldest in Europe, Portugal was founded in 868. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal established the first global empire, thus becoming an economic and political powerhouse. During this period, often referred to as the Age of Discovery, Portuguese explorers like Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, and Vasco da Gama discovered a sea route to India, thus establishing Portugal as a major naval power.
Today, Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world, is a developed economy and has high living standards. It ranks 2nd in the world index of moral freedom, 3rd in the Global Peace Index and 12th in the Press Freedom Index. A member of the United Nations and the European Union, Portugal was also one of the founding members of NATO, the Eurozone, and the OECD.
Its capital is Lisbon and has a population of just over 10 million (as of July 2019). While the official language is Portuguese, English is widely spoken in the capital and beyond.
Climate in Portugal varies largely between the inlands and coastal areas. It is largely sunny throughout the year with mild winters. There is very little snowfall in the high-peak areas in the Serra de Estrella mountains.
Portugal has established a National Health Service called “Servico Nacional de Saude” or SNS. Once a resident has registered with the Portuguese Social Security called “Seguranca Social”, the resident can enrol with the local Health Centre and enjoy subsidised healthcare.

Portugal is situated on the western side of Europe and provides an ideal environment for trade with western Europe. The Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program is a five-year residence-by-investment program for non-EU nationals. The residence permit allows free movement in Europe’s Schengen Area and only requires an average stay of seven days each year in Portugal over this period, which can also count towards citizenship eligibility after five years.
One of the key reasons why Portugal is a preferred option, is because Portugal does not apply a wealth tax. There is also no tax on gifts or inheritances to spouses, descendents, and ascendents. Visa-free travel in Europe’s Schengen Area and the right to live, work, and study in Portugal are key attractions for investors in this program.
